Local SEO on the Costa del Sol: 7 strategies for your business to appear before the competition

Local SEO Costa del Sol businesses

Local SEO is the difference between a potential customer finding you or your competitor when they search on Google. And in a competitive area like the Costa del Sol, where hundreds of restaurants, clinics, and agencies are vying for the same customers, appearing first isn't a luxury — it's a direct competitive advantage.

The good news is that most local businesses don't take SEO seriously. This means that with the right actions, you can overtake competitors who have been around for longer in a relatively short amount of time.

These are the 7 strategies we apply with our clients in Marbella and the Costa del Sol.

Strategy 1 — Optimise your Google My Business listing to the fullest

Google My Business is the most powerful and most underutilised local SEO asset out there. A well-optimised listing is what appears in the Local Pack – those three map results that come out before the organic results when someone searches for a business nearby.

The complete checklist: main category as specific as possible, relevant subcategories, description of 750 characters with your main keywords, always updated opening hours including public holidays, a minimum of 10 recent and high-quality photos, frequently asked questions answered, and a direct link to your website and your booking or contact system.

The detail that makes the difference and that almost no one does: update photos regularly. Google interprets recent activity as a sign of relevance.

Strategy 2 — Get consistent reviews and respond to all of them

Reviews are the number one local ranking factor after profile relevance. Google doesn't just look at how many you have – it looks at how often new ones come in and how you respond to them.

A business with 50 recent reviews ranks better than one with 200 old reviews. Consistency matters more than historical volume.

To get reviews systematically: generate a direct link to your Google listing to leave a review and always have it to hand — in your email signature, on the QR code on your table, in your WhatsApp closing message after a satisfactory service. The best time to ask for it is right after a positive experience, when satisfaction is at its peak.

And always respond – both positive and negative ones. An empathetic and decisive response to a negative review says more about your business than ten five-star reviews.

Strategy 3 — Create local content on your website and blog

Google ranks pages, not websites. And it ranks pages that specifically answer what the user is looking for better.

This means creating landing pages with very specific local keywords: «Italian restaurant in Puerto Banús», «Aesthetic clinic in Estepona», «Marketing agency in Marbella». Each of these pages must exist independently, with its own relevant content, not as a variation of the homepage.

The blog is the most powerful tool for this in the long term. Articles about the area, neighbourhood guides, local events, sector-specific tips for the Costa del Sol — all of this content captures long-tail searches that have less competition but a lot of buying intent.

Strategy 4 — Build local citations with absolute consistency

Local citations are mentions of your business on other websites with your name, address, and phone number – which is called NAP (Name, Address, Phone) in SEO. Google uses them to confirm that your business exists in the location you state and is legitimate.

The most important directories for businesses in Spain and on the Costa del Sol: Google My Business, TripAdvisor, Yelp, Yellow Pages, Hotfrog, Bing Places, Apple Maps, and specific industry directories for your sector.

The golden rule: the name, address, and phone number must be exactly the same everywhere. A minimal variation — «Street» vs «St» or a differently formatted phone number — confuses Google and weakens the trust signal.

Strategy 5 — Optimise your website for mobile and voice searches

70% of local searches are carried out on mobile phones. And an increasing proportion are voice searches: «Hey Google, restaurants near me», «Siri, best beauty clinic in Marbella».

For mobile searches, the fundamental thing is loading speed — Google directly penalises slow mobile websites. Check yours on PageSpeed Insights and make sure you're above 70 points on mobile.

For voice searches, the key is natural language. People don't type «restaurant Marbella» when they speak – they say «What's the best Mediterranean restaurant in Marbella town centre?». Including natural questions and answers on your website and in your Google Business Profile FAQ captures these types of searches.

Strategy 6 — Get backlinks from local media and directories

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. Google interprets them as votes of confidence: if a relevant website links to you, it's a sign that your content or business is worth mentioning.

For local SEO, the most valuable backlinks are from local sources: Marbella and Costa del Sol digital media, local tourism and gastronomy blogs, local business associations, city guides and institutional tourism websites.

The simplest ways to get them are: collaborate with other complementary local businesses, participate in local events that generate online coverage, and create content so good that local media outlets want to link to it.

Strategy 7 – Measure, analyse and adjust every month

SEO without measurement is gardening in the dark. You could be watering the wrong plants without realising it.

The basic tools every business should have set up: Google Search Console to see which keywords you appear for, in what position, and how many clicks you receive; Google Analytics 4 to understand what users do when they reach your website; and Google My Business Insights to see how many calls, route requests, and visits your listing generates each month.

The monthly optimisation cycle we apply at Flavour: review which keywords have gained or lost positions, identify pages with the most impressions but low CTR to improve their titles and metas, publish at least one blog post with a target keyword, and add new photos and a Google My Business post.

Local SEO isn't magic – it's consistency. Businesses that work on it every month for 6-12 months end up dominating their area almost unbeatably.
